Aaj Ka Choghadiya
How Choghadiya Works, and Which Ones to Use
Walk into any shop in Ahmedabad on a festival morning and someone will be checking the Choghadiya before the first sale.
Choghadiya means "four ghadis", about an hour and a half. The time from sunrise to sunset is cut into eight Choghadiya, and the night from sunset to the next sunrise into eight more. Each takes one of seven names, and each name belongs to a planet.
Amrit belongs to the Moon, Shubh to Jupiter, Labh to Mercury and Chal to Venus; these are the ones to use, Chal especially for travel. Udveg belongs to the Sun, Rog to Mars and Kaal to Saturn, and those are kept free of new beginnings. The day opens with the Choghadiya of the weekday's own planet, and the rest follow in a fixed order.
I use Choghadiya the way it was meant: for the everyday. To start a purchase, send a quotation or leave on a trip, a Labh or Amrit Choghadiya that does not touch Rahu Kaal is all most people need.

Questions
Choghadiya: Common Questions
A way of dividing the day and the night into eight parts each, sixteen in all, and naming each part by its quality. It is widely used in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra to pick a good time for a purchase, a journey or the start of work.
Amrit, Shubh and Labh are good, Amrit the best. Chal (also written Char) is neutral and suits travel. Rog, Kaal and Udveg are avoided for anything new.
One eighth of the daylight by day, and one eighth of the night by night. It is about an hour and a half, longer by day in summer and by night in winter.
The day begins with the Choghadiya of the weekday's ruling planet: Udveg on Sunday (Sun), Amrit on Monday (Moon), Rog on Tuesday (Mars), Labh on Wednesday (Mercury), Shubh on Thursday (Jupiter), Chal on Friday (Venus) and Kaal on Saturday (Saturn).
Yes. Choghadiya and Rahu Kaal are separate systems and can overlap. For anything important, many people take a good Choghadiya only where it does not fall in Rahu Kaal.
No. Choghadiya is for everyday timing. A marriage or griha pravesh muhurat is chosen from the full panchang and the charts concerned.
