Brahma Muhurta
What Brahma Muhurat Is, and How to Use It
Before sunrise there is a stretch of the night that feels different from every other hour, and the tradition gives it a name: Brahma Muhurat.
A muhurat is about 48 minutes. Brahma Muhurat is the second-last muhurat of the night, ending one muhurat before sunrise, so it runs from roughly an hour and a half to three quarters of an hour before the Sun comes up. The texts call it the time when the mind is clearest and the senses most at rest.
It is the time prescribed for waking, for bathing, for sandhya and japa, for meditation and for study. Students were told to learn in it, and Ayurveda counts rising in it among the habits that keep a person well.
I tell people not to treat Brahma Muhurat as an exam they can fail. Even ten minutes of quiet in it, a lamp and a mantra, does more than an hour of the same practice at noon. Start with that, and the habit grows by itself.
Prayer and Japa
The traditional time for sandhya, mantra and worship.
Meditation
The mind is quiet before the day's noise begins.
Study
What is learned in these hours is said to stay.
