The Midday Muhurat
Why Abhijit Muhurat Is the Strongest Window of the Day
When people ask me for a good time today and there is nothing else to go by, Abhijit Muhurat is usually my answer.
The day from sunrise to sunset is divided into fifteen muhurats. The eighth, which sits across local noon when the Sun stands highest, is Abhijit, "the victorious". The texts say it can overcome many smaller faults in a muhurat, which is why it is used so widely for beginnings that cannot wait for a fully chosen date.
Because it is centred on your own noon, Abhijit Muhurat is not at 12 o'clock by the clock. In Mumbai it falls later than in Kolkata on the same date, and in winter and summer it moves a little with the length of the day.
Two cautions. It is set aside on Wednesdays. And on days when Rahu Kaal reaches into the midday hours, I use only the minutes of Abhijit that stay clear of it.

Not on Wednesday

Abhijit Muhurat: Common Questions
The eighth of the fifteen muhurats of the day, the one that sits across local noon. It lasts about 48 minutes and is held to be one of the most auspicious windows of any day for beginning something important.
Tradition sets it aside on Wednesdays, and most astrologers follow that. On a Wednesday, choose a good Choghadiya or another muhurat instead.
On some weekdays Rahu Kaal runs into the midday hours. Where the two overlap, the overlapping minutes are best left out; use the part of Abhijit that is clear.
For the big ceremonies, a muhurat is chosen from the whole panchang and the couple's or family's charts. Abhijit is the best general window when no such muhurat is available for smaller beginnings.
It is centred on local noon, halfway between your own sunrise and sunset, which changes with your longitude and the season.
